Taylor Braund, mentee in the 2018 MedTech-Pharma program in NSW (University of Sydney)

I am a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney’s School of Medicine. My PhD research focuses on identifying diagnostic and treatment predictive biomarkers associated with anxious depression, a subtype of Major Depressive Disorder. I complete my research at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and my PhD is supported by a NSW Health PhD Scholarship.

I also work as a Research Associate at Total Brain, a neuroscience company dedicated to assessing and improving brain health. My role as a research associate covers data management, biostatistics, and scientific writing.

I look forward to completing the 2018 IMNIS MedTech-Pharma program in NSW.

Why are you participating in the IMNIS program?

To develop a better understanding of the industry opportunities available to PhD graduates in my field. I am also interested in extending my professional network and learning how to engage successfully with recruiters and interviewers.

What is the most important aspect of this professional relationship for you?

Establishing rapport. Creating a positive relationship where my mentor and I can communicate effectively and comfortably will allow us to achieve our goals – and have fun in the process.

What do you hope your mentor can help you achieve and what is the best piece of advice you have received so far?

My hope is that my mentor can help me understand the best suited industry roles for someone in my field at the completion of my PhD. The best piece of advice I have received so far is that there are many opportunities with varying trajectories, so start thinking early about what you want to do and work towards maximising your opportunities.

What are the top 3 key things you hope to learn through the IMNIS program?

  1. Industry career opportunities
  2. Transitioning to a career in industry
  3. How to further develop my professional network

What has been the most rewarding aspect of the IMNIS program for you so far?

Building my network within the pharmaceutical industry has been invaluable. Also, getting to experience mock interviews with questions used in real interviews from a director in the pharmaceutical industry.
