MENTEE – Michael A. Gerber

Michael Gerber is 30 years old and made his first qualification 2009 as a “technical assistant for information technologies” from the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (IHK) at a vocational school and has qualified by visiting the “Berufsoberschule” to study at a University of Applied Science.

At the University of Applied Science in Hof, he made his Bachelor Degree in “Media Informatics” and continued with the Master “Media Informatics” at the Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich (LMU). He visited at both universities other courses as well, like business administration, law and medical engineering (without taking, just for interest).

During the time in Hof, he was employed next to his studies at the “Institute for Information Systems” (IISYS) and has been self-employed. Both have been quitted to work as a Full-Stack Developer at a consulting company, novere gmbh.

At his time in Munich, he continued, next to his studies, working for one more year as a Full-Stack Developer and made himself self-employed again. While starting the new self-employment, an exchange program changed the plans to write his masters-thesis at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q). He continued his studies as a PhD Student at CARRS-Q under the supervision of Dr.Ronald Schroeter (primary), Prof. Andry Rakotonirainy and Prof. Daniel Johnson.

The topic of his PhD is “Attention Management to Improve Fallback-Readiness in conditional automated vehicles” and explores automotive user interfaces and systems while using Augmented Reality as a tool for attention management in SAE Level 3 (and higher) . The aim of this research is to improve the fallback-readiness, especially Situation Awareness while the automated driving system is engaged (during the so-called non-driving related task).
