Dr Alex Barker, mentee in the 2020-21 program in SA (University of South Australia)

Dr. Alex Barker is a Research Associate within the Musculoskeletal Biology Research Laboratory, led by A/Prof. Paul Anderson at the University of South Australia. Dr. Barker completed her PhD in Medicine at the University of Adelaide in 2019, where she investigated novel bone agents that could improve the rate of bone repair. This work included assessing the agents in both in vitro and pre-clinical models. Dr. Barker is now currently working on an industry collaboration project, to test whether mimicking the nano-spike surface topography found on the wings of insects, which have inherent antimicrobial characteristics, on orthopaedic implants can kill harmful bacteria that cause infections.
